first of all, i must wish jeff, my mom, and biz a very happy birthday! we wish we could celebrate with each of you.
recently, in honor of so many birthdays, john and i climbed
to about 5000 meters. neither of us can recall
a higher ascent, so i guess it was a sort of personal best for us both. the funny thing is, it was not a mountain top
finish. here in nepal, only the peaks
that have snow year round are considered mountains. so, we only summited a hill! crazy, eh?
in other news, this week john
and i tried to trek to talecho lake and throng la pass (the so called highest
and biggest lake and highest and biggest
pass in the world…whatever that means, eh?).
the weather turned poor after the first day of backpacking; we stopped
at a brand new tea house just in time to escape the storm. it was so new, in fact, that the staff set up
the table right in front of our eyes! we
ordered lunch at about 1:30 pm, and we were served at about 5:30 pm. i must say, the food was terrible. the one perk was that they were so starved
for visitors that they let us stay for free!
(side note: lodging along the circuit usually costs between 2-5 USD per
night. it’s the food that brings in the money;
most people spend about 20-30 USD per day on food).
