birthdays and holidays…

john, susanna, endira, kirsty, sarah, and ginger

we’ve had a lot to celebrate while in manang.  last week we celebrated kirsty’s 41st birthday!  eamon ordered a cake and planned a special night out for dinner.  presents included all the fabulous things you can find in manang, such as prayer flags, candy bars, and jewelry.

then came my birthday and easter.  I cannot recall the last time my birthday coincided with the easter holiday.  ginger planned an easter egg hunt.  we each decorated an egg like another member of the HRA staff, and then hid them on easter morning with a candy bar.  we had to get creative with limited supplies, but as you can see…well, we are a creative bunch!  in the evening, endira and ginger made a fabulous dinner of fresh veggies (so far none of us are sick), macaroni and cheese, vegetable curry, chicken curry (again, so far none of the meat eaters are sick), and rice.

side note: all of the water we drink is bottled, boiled, or treated.  we are only suppose to eat vegetables that are cooked and fruits that are pealed (that said, fruits and veggies are hard to come by up in manang).  and you eat any and all meat at your own risk, though it is also a rarity in the mountains.

after dinner, john brought out my favorite dessert here in manang…apple crumble.  the bakery next door had just taken it from the oven.  the seven of us devoured it in a matter of minutes!

we are looking forward to gobi's birthday celebration in early may.  here are some photos from our festivities...
