back in columbus...

i've been back in columbus at the college of optometry for three weeks and well, i sort of hate it.  so much so that it's all i talk about, or should i say, "it's all i complain about."  i could go on and on, but i will refrain :).

each day is different when you are back at the college. here's a look at the schedule:

monday: preschool vision screenings (am), contact lens clinic (pm)
tuesday: low vision clinic
wednesday: student health center clinic
thursday: pediatrics and binocular vision clinic
friday: dispensary (am), contact lens clinic (pm)

this week marks a turning point.  why?  as always, it has to do with the patients.  i rarely write about specific patient interactions, mostly because i'm afraid i will give away some identifiable information regarding the patient and violate patient privacy laws, but today i am going to share a few highlights from the week.

elementary school girl are the drops going to hurt?  (my answer: yes, a little).  okay, but can you make it hurt more for my brother?

new contact lens wearer did i just put a piece of plastic in my eye?  holy cow, this is amazing. (exchange high fives).  oh man, i'm freaking out....get it out, sarah.  get it out now.  (deep breaths). okay, i can handle this.  but really, how do i get it out? (this guy was like 25 years old).

student health center patient so, i like things to be blurry.  can you do that?  (my answer: i can a little, but not so much that it's no longer legal to drive).  oh, then i'll come back later.

binocular vision patient (post traumatic brain injury) the double vision doesn't really bother me.  (my response: really?) well, not as much as having a car fall on me from 70 feet above.

the truth is that nearly every patient encounter has some quotable material, but it's hard to enjoy the experience with a bad attitude.  lesson learned, for now.
