so, a while back john and i went to the running store to buy new running shoes. the salesperson asked the usual questions: hours run per week, what type of terrain, running style, etc. i answered with my usual answers: 20-30 miles per week (though, sometimes that's not the case), paved trails and streets, and i supinate in a pretty serious way. then it was john's turn. he told the salesperson that he needed new running shoes to train for a marathon. i didn't say anything at the time but as soon as we got in the car i said to john, "so, i didn't know you were going to run a marathon." john answered, "i'm not, that sounds painful and boring...but i'll be training for one because i want to do an iron man." i was shocked, because an iron man is a marathon plus a century ride (plus a little more) plus a 2.4 mile (i think it's a 2.4 mile) swim. john was totally serious and i was totally nervous. i was mostly worried that he would hurt himself, or drop dead from exhaustion, or something. so, he promised to follow a training course, which he has been doing ever since.
the sad part: i can no longer outrun john.
